For Nicolaas Marckmann, the canvas is not a departure from the stage, but a new way to hold it still. Born in Indonesia and raised in the Netherlands, Nicolaas’s creative foundation was built on the discipline of classical dance. He received his formative training at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Het Nationale Ballet Academie in Amsterdam, and the Hungarian National Ballet Institute in Budapest.
Nicolaas spent over three decades mastering the art of movement and expression. His career as a dancer took him across the globe, performing with international companies, including Compañía Nacional de Danza (under Nacho Duato) in Spain, Das Opern Ballett Zürich in Switzerland, Companhia Nacional de Bailado in Lisbon, Het Scapino Ballet in Rotterdam, Companhía Contemporánea de Dança in Portugal, and Lanònima Imperial in Barcelona.
His deep connection to the Theatre Institute in Barcelona is rooted in his history as a pedagogue. He has shared his expertise here and at other institutions, including The National Dance Company of Wales, NorrDans in Sweden, the Conservatorio Nacional de Dança in Lisbon, Compañía de Dança de Almada and Lanònima Imperial.
Beyond the spotlight, Nicolaas’s eye for detail was sharpened through his extensive work as a director, stage director, ballet master, and choreographer. His experience in costume and lighting design gave him a unique understanding of the interconnectedness of art forms—how fabric, light, and body create a singular narrative.
In recent years, Nicolaas has expanded these creative horizons into photography, abstract acrylics, and digital abstract art. These works are a testament to a life of experimentation, pushing traditional boundaries by blending the organic with the digital. His art explores that precise intersection where movement meets light, capturing the playfulness of shadow and the raw elegance of a body in space.
This collection reflects a passion for innovation that refuses to stay static. Nicolaas Marckmann invites you to witness a world where the dance never truly ends; it simply transforms into colour and light.
